The community group Bermuda Is Love has launched a drive to advocate for basic needs as human rights and is hosting a series of free events to help the most vulnerable in the community.

The Freedom From Want campaign runs throughout May as part of an ongoing drive.

The events include a free clothing giveaway; a student CV workshop; a community health clinic; a free school breakfast giveaway; a free legal clinic; a labour-rights workshop; and free gardening class.

The group also has an interview lined up with the Daily Hour to discuss the initiative.

Aaron Crichlow, a member of Bermuda Is Love, said: “Together, these human rights embody those ‘basic material needs’, which everyone needs in order to not just survive but also to live with dignity and to reach their full potential.

“Without these essential rights secured, people face the threats of homelessness, climate change, food insecurity, danger, disease, discrimination, inequality and poverty, and are unable to fully participate in society.

“Having enough food to eat, clothes on your back or a place to call home should no longer be considered a privilege but should form part of the very essence of what it means to be Bermudian, to be human.”

He added: “Bermuda Is Love believes that every Bermudian has the right to live a life free of want, free of vulnerability, free of insecurity.”

Bermuda Is Love has been campaigning for seven months for the right to housing, a healthy environment, food, clothing, healthcare, education and access to justice.
