A young Bermudian has been recognised for his talent as well as for preserving cultural tradition and sailing heritage.

Eli Furbert was honoured by the African Diaspora Heritage Trail Foundation.

The 19-year-old, of the East End Mini Yacht Club, received the ADHT Preserving Heritage Award at a ceremony where his sailing talent was highlighted.

He was a member of the team aboard the Mai'Lucy II which took part in the Long Edward Cross Long Distance Comet Race last month. The vessel was captained by Geovanni Hayward.

The ADHT said Mr Furbert’s participation in the sport — and a race known for its rigorous standards and rich tradition — was testimony of his endurance, strategy and camaraderie.

For his efforts as the youngest African-Bermudian sailor to participate in the iconic race, he received a certificate and cash prize at an awards event on June 22 at the West End Sailboat Club, the organisation said.

The ADHT Foundation noted that the recognition put a spotlight on the vital role young people play in carrying forward the legacy of sailing and preserving the cultural significance of maritime heritage.

It reminded the sailing community of the power of youth to inspire and lead and said Mr Furbert set a shining example to inspire sailors.

With support from the organisation and the sailing community, the cultural entity said Mr Furbert’s journey is set to inspire others to follow their dreams on the open waters.

The ADHT said his journey was one of passion and triumph and, with the recognition, the organisation has reaffirmed its dedication to celebrating “excellence, heritage and youthful vigour“.
