New mural in homage to footballer Clyde Best unveiled
A mural of local football legend Clyde Best has been unveiled in Sandys.
Tai-Quan Ottley, Aleem Sheed, Dorann Simons and Barbara Dillas worked on the four-sided mural at the junction of Cambridge Road and Somerset Road.
One side portrays Mr Best, who played for West Ham United in England from 1968 to 1976, and the part facing Champ’s Variety Store promotes the new documentary Transforming the Beautiful Game: The Clyde Best Story.
Mr Sheed has been making copper art pieces for about six years and worked on the football and map of Bermuda on a third portion of the mural.
He said: “Ms Dillas, my primary school art teacher, approached me about working on it.
“I was always good at drawing; it was something that just happened, but I ended up liking it. It was a good project to be a part of.”
Transforming the Beautiful Game: The Clyde Best Story was celebrated at Cambridge Beaches Resort & Spa yesterday, where a short clip of the documentary was played to invited guests.
An earlier mural of Mr Best was completed along Clyde Best Lane, also in Sandys, in 2022.
• UPDATE: this article has been updated to clarify that a short clip of Transforming the Beautiful Game: The Clyde Best Story was played to invited guests yesterday. It was not the documentary’s premiere, as earlier reported
