The Bermuda Road Safety Council is urging residents to be “vigilant, responsible and respectful” of the island’s road safety laws as the holiday period approaches.

Altonio Roberts, the body’s chairman, made the call after the island recorded three road deaths tied to separate incidents, bringing the total to eight in the first five months of 2026.

Mr Roberts said: “Any loss of life is a tragedy and our community mourns with those who are grieving.

“We are reminded, once again, of the importance of safety and responsibility behind the wheel. Our thoughts are with all affected during this difficult time and we stand committed to doing everything we can to prevent future tragedies.”

He noted the significance of Bermuda Day, adding: “It’s a celebration of our heritage, our unity and our community spirit.

“I encourage everyone to embrace this weekend with joy and gratitude, making it a memorable and safe time for all.”

Mr Roberts added: “If you plan to involve yourself in alcohol or other substances, please make the right decision — ensure you have a designated driver or alternative transportation.

“There is zero tolerance for intoxication while operating a vehicle on Bermuda’s roads. Doing so not only endangers your life but also the lives of others — a risk we cannot afford to take.”

He said the council is in full support of the Bermuda Police Service and law enforcement personnel working to keep the island’s roads safe.

“Let’s work together to ensure that Bermuda Day remains a celebration of culture and community, marked by safety and care,” he said.

This week, police named Leroy Smith, 43, who was involved in a crash on April 30, as Bermuda’s sixth fatality this year.

The two other road deaths, a 73-year-old motorcyclist and a 30-year-old motorcyclist, were involved in separate collisions that took place on Monday.
