Island-wide technical issue at Digicel affects phone lines
Digicel has suffered an island-wide technical issue affecting its customers, which included the police service and hospital.
A company spokeswoman said on Monday morning that the communications provider was working to address the outage, which had affected portions of its fixed-line services.
She said: “Our technical teams have been working continuously since the incident began on July 12 to restore service as quickly and safely as possible.
“We recognise the disruption this has caused to affected customers and sincerely apologise for the inconvenience.
“We are actively co-ordinating our response with the relevant authorities and technology partners as restoration efforts continue.
“Our immediate focus is restoring services safely, maintaining network integrity and minimising the impact on customers.”
As of noon on Monday, the spokeswoman said that emergency calling services, including 911, had been partially restored, but service remained “intermittent”.
The spokeswoman confirmed shortly after 5pm that the police and hospital were receiving calls to their emergency lines and that the fire service was never impacted by the outage.
She added: “We recognise how important this service is and our teams continue to work around the clock until full and stable service has been restored.”
The Bermuda Police Service said earlier that they were experiencing issues with their phone lines, including the main police number 911.
However, as of 10.30am a police spokesman confirmed that all BPS phone lines were back up and running again.
The Bermuda Hospitals Board earlier noted that people with medical emergencies could call the emergency department on 239-1301.
Butterfield Bank told customers that a number of its phone lines were temporarily out of service.
A spokesman said that if clients needed immediate assistance they should call the main number 295-1111, which was working as normal.
He added: “To speak with a specific department or individual, please reach out via e-mail, mobile phone or by calling the contact centre 295-1111, option 6. They will be able to connect you via our internal system.
“We will update you once we receive confirmation from Digicel that phone service has been fully restored.”
The Regulatory Authority of Bermuda is responsible for overseeing the communications network across the island.
An RA spokesman said: “The authority is aware of the communications outage affecting Digicel customers and is monitoring the situation.
“Consistent with its statutory mandate, the RA will engage with the relevant parties as appropriate to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and assess any regulatory considerations.”
