Kenya Trott etched her name in local snooker history after producing a stunning upset in the DeSilva Cup at Warwick Workmen’s Club this week.

The former Royal Artillery Association player became the first female to reach the quarter-final of the competition after upstaging favourite Winslow Smith 2-0 in an historic second-
round clash.

Trott took the first frame 61-49 to seize early pole position in the best of three frames series.

Very little separated the two rivals in a fiercely fought second frame which Trott ultimately won 80-72 on the black to seal the deal.

Among those hailing Trott’s impressive feat was Bermuda Snooker Association president Paul Fedden.

“Winslow is a good solid, gritty kind of player, so for her to beat him was definitely a shock result,” he told The Royal Gazette.“On behalf of the association I am very pleased that a female has finally progressed, under my watch at least.

“There were female players before, many years back. But since I have been around there’s been very little success from the women players, so it’s nice to see someone break in the ranks and getting through to the quarter-finals, first ever.

“I am delighted that we’ve got some progress with the female game. It’s nice to have some progress in that area.”

Trott will now face Scott Barnes in the next round of the competition.

Also advancing in the last eight were Zane DeSilva and Richard Burton.

DeSilva prevailed 2-0 over Tyler Moniz at Spanish Point Boat Club.

DeSilva edged Moniz on the black 58-53 in the first frame before taking the second 50-44 in another tight contest to progress to the next round.

Former Somerset Eagles goalkeeper and Government MP DeSilva then kept the momentum going after edging rival Kyle Williams 2-1 in a second round clash at RAA.

DeSilva won the first frame comfortably, 51-8, but Williams came storming back to take the second 49-28 to the score.

However, Williams’s impressive fightback ultimately fell short as DeSilva won the third frame 43-22 to seal the deal and progress to the quarter-final where he will take on the eventual winner of the second-round match between John Orr and Nadanja Bailey.

Burton moved onto the next round courtesy of a 2-0 win over Fedden at Spanish Point Boat Club.

Burton won the opening frame 66-45 to seize early control before taking the second 66-47 to advance to the quarter-final where he will come up against former champion Steven Bremar.
