National pickleball champions crowned
The growth of pickleball shows no sign of stopping with nearly 100 entries across 23 divisions competing in the 2025 National Championships last week.
After five days of exciting action at WER Joell Stadium, national champions were crowned in singles, doubles and mixed doubles across multiple skill levels and age groups.
Several members of Bermuda’s National Team, fresh from a successful campaign at the 2025 Pickleball World Cup in Fort Lauderdale, delivered standout performances at the championships.
It was no surprise that Gavin Manders picked up a hat-trick of titles as he confirmed his status as the No 1 male player in Bermuda. Manders won the men’s singles crown by beating Tom Mills 11-2, 11-6 in the final. He also teamed up with Mical Russell to win the men’s doubles 4.5+, with the pair fighting back from a game down to beat Jamie Stowe and Jasper Thomas. His third title came after joining forces with Patricia Mills to beat Stowe and Lily Hallett in the mixed doubles 4.5+.
Bermuda’s top female player Imani Phillips also showed her class, winning the women’s singles final against Rachel Sawden. Mills and Melisa Judd combined to beat Hallett and Courtney Fisher in the women’s doubles 4.0+.
Manders and Emma Simmons, who was champion in the over-50 women’s singles, received the outstanding performance and achievement Award in recognition of their exceptional results, while Russell was honoured with the passion, perseverance & excellence Award for his dedication and competitive spirit throughout the tournament.
Val Stevenson was also recognised with an award for outstanding contribution, reflecting her longstanding commitment to the Pickleball Association Bermuda’s success both on and off the court.
“The 2025 National Championships demonstrated the incredible talent, sportsmanship, and community spirit that defines pickleball in Bermuda” said George Thomas, PAB president.
“From our National Team athletes competing at the highest level to players of all ages and abilities stepping onto the court, this week highlighted why pickleball has become such a vibrant part of our sporting landscape. We’re proud of every participant, grateful to our volunteers and excited about the future of our sport in Bermuda.”
