Bremar and DeSilva retain national snooker doubles title
Steven Bremar and Zane DeSilva maintained their stranglehold on their Bermuda Snooker Association Open Doubles title after pulling off a resounding 3-0 win against Spanish Point Boat Club’s Fred Richardson and Alan Smith in the final at Sandys Boat Club.
The Warwick Workmen’s Club pair won the opening two frames 42-29 and 67-11 to take firm control of the best-of-five series.
With their backs against the wall and staring straight down the barrel of defeat, Richardson and Smith offered more resistance in the third frame. However, two-times defending champions Bremar and DeSilva prevailed again 53-48 to win the competition for what is believed to be a record third consecutive year.
“To win it three times in a row is an achievement that to my knowledge has not been achieved before,” Bremar told The Royal Gazette.
“The last frame went to a blackball decider but we were definitely in control of the other two.”
Warwick captain Bremar and team-mate DeSilva, the Deputy Premier, have formed an unstoppable partnership and have dominated the tournament in recent years.
“I am a good set-up man,” DeSilva joked. “Steven does the potting, I do the setting up.”
Bremar, the Bermuda Snooker Association president, puts the team’s success down to good chemistry and patience.
“You want your partner to be on the same wavelength as you because sometimes it’s just not going for shots,” he said. “Sometimes it’s just waiting and being patient, which has been the key to our success.
“Zane and myself have played for at least ten years together so we know one another. But it’s definitely a patient game. We have played together at least ten years since we got back together and won that trophy probably seven or eight times.”
Victory was especially sweet for Bremar who achieved an impressive personal double after being crowned national Open Singles champion this season.
“It is definitely a remarkable double,” he said.
