Sims squeezes through after final round slip-up

Michael Sims: Crept into the next stage of the PGA Q School by the narrowest of margins

“Too close for comfort”.That's the way Michael Sims summed up yesterday's final round of the first stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School at the Lantana Golf Club in Texas, USA.The Bermudian pro carded a two-over-par 74 that was just good enough to advance through to next month's second stage of Q School.Sims completed the 72-hole tournament tied for 18th with three others at four-under-par 284.Only the top 18 qualifiers and ties went through to the next stage.“It was obviously a bit too close for comfort,” Sims told The Royal Gazette. “But I guess the key thing is that I got through, which is all that mattered.”At one stage Sims appeared to be falling off the rails, carding a double bogey at the par three 15th — his first and only bogey at a par-three hole for the tournament. His approach to the green landed in the drink, leaving his qualifying hopes hanging in the balance.“It was an island green and the wind was coming from the left, the pin was tucked left and I tugged my shot a little bit,” Sims said. “If it was a foot further to the right it would've been fine.”Sims ended up two-putting for the double bogey after taking a penalty drop. But he came roaring back on the very next hole with a birdie to move back to two-over for the round where he remained the rest of the way.“It's very satisfying and I can't even tell you the range of emotions I went through the hour after (play ended) other than it's good to get through,” Sims said.Sims started the final round tied for 12th at six under par.Yesterday he made the turn at one over for the round after three-putting the par-four sixth hole. The past Bermuda Open champion dropped another shot at the par-four 10th hole after he failed to get up and down after blasting out of a greenside bunker. He completed the back nine at one over par, which was enough to carry him safely across the line.“I thought I needed to birdie two of my last three holes,” Sims said. “But as it turned out I didn't and I'm just happy to get through to the next stage of qualifiers.”Sims' only other birdie for the round arrived at the par-five 13th where he two-putted after his five iron approach landed 15 feet away from the cup.The Bermudian pro was one of the top 20 eGolf Professional Tour members on the earnings money list whose $4,500 PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament entry fee was paid for by eGolf.Australian Daniel Nisbet (264) won this week's tournament in Texas by a commanding 12 shots over nearest rival Robert Lopez (276) with Zack Reeves (277) rounding off the top three in the field.
