St George’s Prep students stay course with charity golf initiative
A pilot programme designed to break down barriers preventing young Bermudians from playing golf recently celebrated a significant milestone.
Nine students from St George’s Preparatory School became the first graduates of the School-to-Course Programme, which was established by newly formed charity Beyond The Fairways Foundation.
The students completed a three-term journey introducing them to a sport capable of changing lives within their own school environment before progressing them on to the course at Five Forts Golf Club.
The pilot programme began as a small after-school initiative involving 15 students from St George’s Prep. Over the course of three terms, nine students completed the full School-to-Course pathway and earned the opportunity to continue their development through Golfzon Leadbetter Academy Bermuda-Five Forts.
Beginning this academic year, the Foundation will significantly expand the programme by delivering golf instruction during physical education classes, introducing many more students to the game before providing after-school and on-course pathways for those who wish to continue.
In recognition of their achievement, the graduates have been awarded full scholarships to continue their development through Golfzon Leadbetter Academy Bermuda-Five Forts, beginning in September.
St George’s Prep principal Gail Smith is grateful for the positive impact the programme has made on the students.
“I am so grateful to have had Beyond The Fairways Foundation at St George’s Preparatory this school year,” she said. “Coaches Quinton Sherlock Jr, Arriek Douglas and Cindy Semos had a tremendous impact on our students.
“They gave countless hours to introduce our children to golf while providing coaching of the highest calibre. Friday golf quickly became the students’ favourite part of the week because the coaches were so knowledgeable, patient and fun.
“This has been a wonderful experience for our entire school community and we are incredibly grateful for everything Beyond The Fairways has done for our students.”
Foundation chairman and Golfzon Leadbetter Academy Bermuda director of instruction Sherlock is inspired by the programme’s early success.
“This is exactly what the School-to-Course Programme was created to achieve,” he said.
“The goal was never simply to teach golf. It was to create opportunity, build confidence, and give young people access to experiences that can shape their future. Watching these students progress from their school assembly room onto the golf course has been deeply rewarding.”
The foundation extended its appreciation to the St George’s Prep principal for embracing the programme as well as to volunteer coach Semos for her dedication and countless hours supporting the students throughout the pilot year.
The foundation was founded by four Bermudians — Sherlock, Douglas, Daniel Augustus and Ebonie Cox — who grew up in golf, progressed through the game at every level and have joined forces through a shared belief that too many young Bermudians are being left outside a game that could transform their lives.
The organisation is built around three pillars; youth development, access and inclusion and education and scholarships.
Building on the success of the pilot, the Foundation plans to expand their School-to-Course Programme to an additional school during the upcoming academic year while simultaneously broadening the range of junior golf opportunities available across Bermuda.
Among these initiatives is the foundation’s Summer Junior Golf League, providing regular competitive opportunities and valuable on-course experience throughout the summer.
The foundation also plans to launch an Island Junior Golf Tour, featuring 18 and 36-hole events, to help prepare Bermuda’s aspiring golfers for elite junior-level and collegiate competition.
It also plans to expand its Junior Golf Programme, offering clearly defined pathways for golfers of varying abilities. As the foundation’s technical coaching partner, Golfzon Leadbetter Academy Bermuda-Five Forts will continue delivering instruction for scholarship recipients and programme participants, while more advanced players will have the opportunity to compete on the Island Junior Golf Tour.
The foundation is also seeking corporate sponsors and community partners to support its expanding initiatives, including the School-to-Course Programme, Summer Junior Golf League, Island Junior Golf Tour and Junior Development Scholarship Fund.
It believes these partnerships will help remove financial barriers and create life-changing opportunities for young Bermudians while playing an important role in establishing a legacy that will benefit generations to come.
“Every child deserves the chance to discover what they are capable of,” Sherlock said.
“Golf changed each of our lives. With the support of our community, we can ensure it changes the lives of the next generation as well.”
