Paddy shows why he prefers golf to cricket

Former Premier Ewart Brown called on his past cricket experience to throw down a few balls to Padraig Harrington during the Grand Slam Pro-Am.

Multiple Major winner Padraig Harrington perhaps demonstrated why he is a golfer rather than a cricketer during an impromptu game of cricket on the 18th tee yesterday. The two-time British Open champion endured a miserable time at the crease where he had his bails dislodged twice by the gentle off-break bowling of former Premier Ewart Brown in front of an impressive gallery.“I wanted to smash the ball away,” Harrington smiled, before turning his attention to the more serious business of golf.Former Premier Brown took matters all in stride.“I enjoyed playing a little cricket up on 18th tee,” he said. “I was bowling a little off breaks and cleaned bowled twice Mr. Harrington for about two runs.”While the former Premier tied Harrington in knots, cricket legend Brian Lara and TV personality Michael Breed fared much better during their turn at bat.“Ewart Brown’s bowling was pretty average and I don’t think he expected to be commended too much with that bowling,” Lara smiled.“We all wanted to smack him a bit but didn’t get the opportunity to because the boundary was too close. We didn’t want anyone to get hurt.“The boundary line was too close for me to express myself and I would’ve really love to have hit it far. But we had a little problem with the crowd encroaching a little bit too much.”Breed added: “Hitting the cricket ball is easy, it’s the golf ball that’s hard.”Cricket aside, Harrington showed true class with some clinical putting, draining a 40-foot, downhill breaking birdie putt on the 14th green. The Irishman’s presence inspired his team-mates.“When Padraig Harrington came and played with us we seemed to all want to impress him and we played better,” Brown said. “Today’s round was up, down and all the way around.“It was a good round and the main thing is I had fun and played with some outstanding gentlemen. We enjoyed ourselves and that’s what was most important.”Lara agreed.“We had great fun,” he said. “It was great company and that’s what’s most important.“We weren’t in the prizes and I think everyone would agree we didn’t putt very well. Michael Breed actually said the golf went haywire after we played cricket.“But playing cricket on the 18th tee with Padraig Harrington, Michael Breed and Ewart Brown definitely eclipsed everything else.”Lara added: “It’s always nice to come to Bermuda. It’s just a wonderful place to be and interacting with the people and seeing the respect and following that I still have away from home is something I will always cherish.”
