Sims fires superb 63 in Q School tournament

Michael Sims fired a magnificent eight-under-par 63 at the Plantation Preserve Golf Course in Florida today to bolster his chances of advancing to the final stage of PGA Q School.The Bermudian's bogey-free round included six birdies and an eagle that left him in a two-way tie for fourth with a three-day total of 11-under-par 202 with 18 holes left to play.Only the top 19 and ties following tomorrow's final round will advance to the demanding five round final stage of PGA Q School to be held later this month.Sims started today's round at the par-71 Plantation Preserve layout tied for 28th and quickly began his ascent up the leader board with a birdie on the opening hole.He also birdied the par -four seventh hole to make the turn at two-under-par for the round.Even better fortunes awaited the past Bermuda Open champion on the back nine as he carded an eagle at the par -five tenth hole before rolling in additional birdies at the 13th, 14th, 15th and 18th holes to strengthen his bid to get back on one of the USA's major tours.Sims' flawless round was only bettered by North Carolina's Joshua Brock who carded the day's lowest score of nine-under-par 62.Florida resident Rob Oppenheim (196) currently leads the field by four shots over nearest rival Mee Whee Kim (200) of South Korea.
