Bermuda gunning for more glory in Jamaica

Bermuda will be hoping for repeat success at the GGA Four-Ball Golf Championships in Montego Bay, Jamaica, over the weekend.

The island was represented last year by a team of six at in Trinidad & Tobago that punched above their weight, with Eric West and Jonathan James securing the Mid-Amateur title, and Mark “Beaver” Ray and Roger Brangman finishing runners-up in the seniors division.

The Bermuda team has doubled in number this year, event making the group eligible to compete for overall honours.

“In order to win the overall title, you must have teams in each division. So it’s awesome this year to have Hav Trott, Quinton Sherlock Sr in the legends division, Chris Phillips and Geoff Piggott returning, as they went to Tobago last year, and Richard Marriott in with Johnnie James in the Mid-Amateurs Division,” Bermuda Golf Association general secretary Darrin Lewis told The Royal Gazette.

“In the ladies we have Morgan Lightbourne, Sarah Dwyer, Tracy Burgess and Ann Symonds in the senior ladies division, so we have a very good team.”

The Bermdua contingent warmed up with a practice round at the par 72 Cinnamon Hill Golf Club yesterday.

“Practice round went well. They played well and are in good spirits,” Lewis said.

“The course has some challenging holes that you really need to manage well, but they are looking forward to it.

“It is very hot out here and it’s quite a bit of teams involved — 92 players.”

Lewis is delighted to see the island compete again on the international stage.

“This again is an opportunity for Bermuda Golf Association to compete regionally just to see where we are,” he said.

“The juniors had a very successful summer programme going to Pinehurst Optimist, Caribbean Juniors in Puerto Rico and then the North America Cup in Canada. So now our seniors, who went to Island Games this year are now back at the Caribbean Four-Ball and looking forward to good things from them.”

The three-day, two-ball, better-ball tournament runs until Sunday.
