Bermuda’s golfers did the island proud after winning trophies at the Four-Ball Golf Championships in Jamaica at the weekend.

The 12-strong team secured the bronze medal after finishing an impressive third overall (79), with the team of Quinton Sherlock Sr and Hav Trott (213) and Tracy Burgess and Ann Symonds (76) leading the charge by winning the men’s over-70 and ladies over-45 titles respectively.

Mark “Beaver” Ray and Roger Brangman (217) were also among the island’s standout performers after securing medals by finishing runners-up in the Senior Men’s Division at the event for the second straight year.

Darrin Lewis, the Bermuda manager, hailed the team’s resounding success in the Caribbean.

“As team manager I am pleased with the overall results,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“We had six players last year and we got a first and a second. This year we came with twelve players, a full team, and were able to bring home two firsts and a second, so we are trending in the right direction.

“Hav Trott and Quinton Sherlock Sr captured the over-70 men’s title, Tracy Burgess and Ann Symonds captured the 45 and Over Women’s title and Mark Ray and Roger Brangman actually came from tied for third to overtake Barbados with a strong final round to snatch a podium spot and get the silver again, which they did last year in Tobago.”

Bermuda’s golfers had their work cut out against formidable opposition under trying conditions, which Bermuda Golf Association general secretary Lewis said took its toll on some of the newer team members.

“We had some newbies this year and tournament golf is a different beast as far as the rigours of three long days,” he said.

“There were 5hr 45min rounds in hot temperatures that took its toll on a few but overall team spirits are good

“It’s a great experience and the team grounded it out. It’s been good and we’re looking forward to next year and bigger things ahead.”

Chris Phillips, Geoff Piggott, Richard Marriott, Johnnie James, Morgan Lightbourne and Sarah Dwyer were the remaining members on Bermuda’s team.

Phillips and Piggott (238) finished eighth in the Super Senior Men’s Division, Marriott and James (231) seventh in the Mid-Amateur Men’s Division, while Lightbourne and Dwyer (86) just missed out on the podium after finishing fourth in the Senior Ladies Over 25 Division.

Phillips, Piggott were also the other two surviving members along with Ray and Brangman from the island’s team that competed at last year’s event in Tobago, where Eric West and Jonathan James secured the Mid-Amateur title.

Hosts and defending champions Jamaica claimed overall honours to retain their title with Trinidad and Tobago claiming the silver medal in the annual three-day, two-ball, better-ball tournament held at the par 72 Cinnamon Hill Golf Club.

Bahamas, Cayman Islands, St Lucia and Turks & Caicos were the other countries represented at the event.
