Bermudian to manage $1bn Canadian health budget

A former United Bermuda Party politician is to manage a $1 billion budget as a director at a Canadian government health agency.Neville Darrell has been appointed to the South East Local Health Integration Network in Ontario, and begins the voluntary role on June 20.The network is one of 14 in Ontario and is the facilitator for any health-related facility that receives provincial funding.According to John Ferguson, who is the director Mr Darrell will replace when his four-year term of office ends: “Our LHIN is responsible for the funding of 124 facilities including the budgets for 12 hospitals. Our budget this year was just over $1 billion [Canadian].”Mr Darrell, 63, was born in Bermuda but spent most of his adult life in Canada, where he also has citizenship.He returned to Bermuda after a 30-year absence in 1997 to work in government’s labour relations department. He was then invited to serve the United Bermuda Party as a Senator in 2001.Mr Darrell was elected as an MP in 2002, and represented the constituency of Warwick West until 2007. He was the Opposition spokesman for Education throughout his political career.Mr Darrell retired from Bermuda politics before the 2007 general election and returned to Canada to recuperate from health problems. Now recovered, he runs a bed-and-breakfast with his wife, Sandra, at their home in Prince Edward County, Ontario.He said of his new role with the health integration network: “I have been involved in volunteerism throughout my adult life. I’m looking forward to community engagement and meeting with stakeholders. One of the greatest joys of my life has been to offer myself as a volunteer.”Mr Darrell, who describes himself as a proud Bermudian who visits home often, has previously volunteered in the arenas of child welfare, police complaints, education and mental health.“One finds a rich life if you give of yourself to the community,” he said.
