Dozens of young people have rolled up their sleeves to join the Bermuda Hospitals Board’s summer student programme.

A BHB spokeswoman said that 39 students had been selected from 143 applicants, including 11 pursuing studies in allied health fields including kinesiology, social work, biomedical science, pharmacology, radiological science and laboratory science.

Nyon Steede, the BHB director of human resources and operations, said: “We have seven medical students, three pre-med and four psychology majors.

“Four of our seven nursing students are gaining experience on our long-term care units. One is in the ICU, one in maternity and one, who has a double nursing/psychology major, has been assigned to the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute.

“We have four students enrolled in healthcare business and business administration programmes, one pursuing studies in human resources, one in IT and one in digital forensics.”

Judy Richardson, acting BHB chief executive and chief of nursing, said that healthcare is an expanding field with a wide variety of opportunities for employment for qualified Bermudians.

Paul Jones, BHB’s chief people officer, added: “We’re delighted to have attracted so many promising students to our summer programme this year.

“The exposure and experience our students gain helps them determine if they are pursuing the right field for them. We are pleased to be investing in the future of Bermuda.”

Those who are interested in joining the BHB summer student programme next year are urged to look for application notices in December, with the application deadline always falling on the last day of February.
