Panthers start campaign with victory

The Bermuda Hockey Federation (BHF) opening weekend saw some close matches in both the Men’s and Ladies divisions.

The Panthers got their campaign off to a winning start, edging out a 3-1 win over Chameleons in a 3-1 victory.

Daryll Van Heerden, Sums Dharmalingan and Phil Philpott all scored for the winners, while Richard Cox was the sole scorer for Chameleons.

Richard Marriott scored a hat-trick and Nigel Dean grabbed a brace as the Polecats thrashed the Upstarts 6-0.

Donnie Simmons also netted a goal in the hug win.

In the only Ladies ‘A’ division match of the weekend, Budgies set the tone with a 3-0 win over Canaries.

Iman Smith scored twice in the Budgies opening day win, while Raven Pearman helped herself to a goal courtesy of Keishae Robinson.

In B league action, Bluebirds defeated Canaries with a 2-0 victory with Maria Harris scoring late in the first half and Kourtney Fassler sealing the win with a goal in the second.

In a close contest, Longtail/Canaries lost to Budgies who went on to win with a final score of 2-1.

Jaselle Smith scored early in the first half, and the lead was then doubled when Pearman scored just before the break.

The Longtail/Canaries did very well to contain Budgies in the second half and did not concede any more goals and Jokiah Richardson put Longtail/Canaries on the scoresheet with a field goal in the 54th minute, although that would be as close as they would come.

Ravens ‘B’ fielded a very young, mainly junior team this weekend, and had a baptism by fire when they took on a very strong team of experienced, senior Wildcats players.

Ravens took some time to find their feet and managed to absorb the constant pressure applied from Wildcats, but managed to get their offence going and some good link-up play between Georgia Harris and Kristen Morbey was effective.

Wildcats defender Belthea Pringle managed to break down the majority of the Ravens attack.

The Wildcats consistency was rewarded in the 46th minute when Darcy Gimas scored the only goal of the game to sealing the victory.
