Bermuda women’s hockey coach Kovin Moodley is devastated after his team finished last at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Dominican Republic.

Moodley’s side won one and lost four of the five matches they played at the tournament to end up bottom of the pile when the hockey action concluded on Wednesday.

“I am heartbroken at the way the tournament panned out,’’ said Moodley.

“We came with ambitious goals and fell short of them. We felt like we could compete in most games but failed to capitalise as effectively as we could have.

“We came to play at the higher level and that comes with smaller margins. Sport is harsh and demanding but we continue to play because we love the game.”

Bermuda’s failure to finish in the top two at the CAC Games means that they are out of contention for a place in next year’s Paris Olympics.

No international action is lined up for Bermuda until next year when the island hosts the 2024 Women’s Pan American Challenge at the National Sports Centre from September 20 to 28. The tournament will serve as the qualifier for the 2027 Pan American Games.

“The foundation was set this year and a new movement will take place,’’ stated Moodley.

“Bermuda was not able to achieve but we made a statement of intent and look towards the Pan American Challenge in September 2024.”

Moodley saluted his players for displaying courage and determination even when things were not going according to plan and views the CAC Games as a starting point.

“I want to highlight the effort the ladies put in,’’ he said.

“It's not easy to keep fighting especially when results don't go the way we want. There was a lot of trust and willingness to give a maximal effort, which any coach appreciates.”
