Bacardi gave $4m to good causes
Bermuda-based Bacardi Ltd. contributed $4 million to philanthropic and community involvement programmes while its employees put in 2,021 hours of volunteer time during the fiscal year ended March 31, 2010.The spirits giant’s corporate responsibility (CR) report revealed that the company built the largest wind turbine installation at its leading global distillery near San Juan in Puerto Rico to harness natural wind energy to help generate seven percent of the site’s power.Bacardi also reported that the total renewable energy currently being used by the company’s manufacturing facilities was 30 percent more than in fiscal 2009 and 70 percent higher than in fiscal 2006, while it made an 11.3 percent reduction in total energy used over previous year and a 19.9 percent reduction over the past four years, as well as cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 18.9 percent from last year or a four-year reduction of 30.6 percentThe report entitled ‘Spirit for Life’, which focused on improvement in environmental, resource sustainability and social responsibility metrics, is in its third year and“We are on an exciting journey in transforming Bacardi to meet future growth opportunities in a sustainable way,” said Séamus McBride, Bacardi Ltd. By living our four core values of trust, caring, passion and excellence we commit to build a more sustainable future for all.”Robert Furniss-Roe, vice-president global sales and corporate communications and executive head of corporate responsibility initiatives at Bacardi Ltd., said: “Our CR report is a comprehensive look at how Bacardi strives to act responsibly to benefit consumers, employees, customers, suppliers and communities where we operate and sell our brands.“Our determined focus on using less energy and generating less waste led to an impressive year-over-year 8.6 percent improvement in water use and 5.9 percent improvement in energy efficiency totaling 16.6 percent over the past four years.”The company expanded its activation of ‘Champions Drink Responsibly’, an international social responsibility campaign featuring Formula One seven-time champion Michael Schumacher, in 38 countries reaching more than 37 million legal drinking age and above consumers; and exceeded its target of training 20,000 bartenders in responsible selling techniques.It is also the only major spirits company certified to be operating in accordance with world’s most recognised standards for quality (ISO 9001), environment (ISO 14001), and health and safety (OHSAS 18001) at all of its production facilities, while making an 8.6 percent improvement in water use efficiency over last year, resulting in a 17.4 percent improvement over the past four years and exceeding its five-year target of 15 percent.
