Cox outlines importance of OECD forum

Premier and Finance Minister Paula Cox has reminded the public of the importance of the upcoming OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development)/Group of 20 Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information this month. The high level meeting of the Global Forum Steering Group, of which Bermuda is one of three vice-chairs, takes place at the Fairmont Southampton on Monday May 30 and is followed by the full meeting of the Global Forum on May 31 and June 1.Premier Cox said: “The architects of the tax revenue aspects of the global finance system will be among us next week with many arriving this coming weekend.“Among them are Heads of State, Ministers of Finance and Deputy Ministers and their equivalents, from all the who’s who countries involved in operating international financial centres.”Powerhouse G20 countries to small island jurisdictions will be in attendance, with more than 200 senior government officials descending on the Island’s shores for the event. And the Premier added that all residents will benefit in some way from Bermuda hosting the OECD Global Forum.“Our international business executives understand the significance of this event to their businesses, but what does hosting this conference mean to Bermudians?” she said.“Some delegates are booking accommodations at one of our small guest houses on South Shore which pleases me to see small business benefit. No doubt some delegates may visit Harbour Nights and meet our Bermudian vendors and entertainers and yes, they will shop and shop.”Meanwhile a selection of senior school students will attend parts of the conference as part of an invaluable learning experience.
