The Department of Labour has outlined Bermuda’s minimum wage, paid leave, protections for young workers and other critical employment-related policies.
The publication, Know your rights at work, follows amendments to Bermuda’s Employment and Labour Code.
A spokesman explained: “The code includes the Employment Act 2000 and the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 2021 and establishes minimum standards of employment and protections for workers across Bermuda.”
He added that the 12-page document is “structured in short, easy-to-read sections, allowing employees to quickly reference key information when needed”. It is also designed to be printed and carried,
Jason Hayward, Minister of Economy and Labour, said: “This guidance document is about empowering individuals with practical, accessible information so they can navigate their employment with confidence.
“At the same time, it supports employers by promoting clarity, fairness and a shared understanding of responsibilities across our labour market.”
All full-time, part-time, temporary and student employees are entitled to receive a minimum hourly wage of $17.13
Employers must present employees with a written policy addressing workplace bullying and sexual harassment
It is illegal for employees to be terminated while on vacation or on sick, maternity, paternity or bereavement leave
People younger than 15 cannot work in industrial employment, while those under the age of 17 cannot work past midnight
The spokesman said: “A clear understanding of employment rights and obligations can help prevent disputes, support early resolution and contribute to a more stable, productive and fair working environment.”
It can be viewed via gov.bm/department/labour, under the resources section, as well as at the Department of Labour’s Sophia House office on 48 Church Street, Hamilton.
