Letters to the Editor, February 3
Sign your nameJanuary 29, 2011Dear Sir,The obvious difference between Duncan Moran’s letter, and your “Observer”, is that Duncan’s is signed. In another letter, if you will permit, I will submit a commentary about Dr Duncan Moran. He is certainly no hard-core supporter of the UBP, and has never been.I believe, beside Observer’s extreme defensiveness, and his effort to be funny/clever, he has made no defence of Paula Cox. But, moreover, Paula Cox is not on trial it is her policies (and may I say, politics) that all Bermudians except the most entrenched, blind supporters of the PLP, would criticise. The present level of debt has happened on Ms Cox’s watch; the out-of-control expenditures of Ewart Brown happened while she held the purse strings. This is an observation that does not infer that the UBP would have done better. If I am correct, Terry Lister is an accountant; Paula Cox is a lawyer, not an accountant. Duncan’s comments are not that Terry Lister is the only person in the PLP that can count/add. If “Observer’ is going to blindly defend Ms Cox’s performance over these past years, then do not waste my time her performance is indefensible!I am also on record that I strongly disagreed with Dr Ewart Brown’s holding more than one portfolio (I strongly disagreed with Sir David Gibbons’ holding two), and Paula Cox has nothing to recommend herself for the Ministry of Finance, but, herself. I strongly disagree with a Premier’s choosing the Cabinet, and I have done so for 40 years! This awarding more than one portfolio to oneself is nonsense. So, let me make a suggestion to you. “Observer”, call Duncan Moran; call me do not hide under a rock. You want an open, honest “debate” (dialogue), then sign your name; criticise your party (as I have for years criticised “my party”), and try not to be so insulting!SANDERS FRITH-BROWNWarwickChanges please!January 29, 2011Dear Sir,With all of the recent publicity in regards to premature babies and the new support group that has formed to support their parents I find it necessary to share my personal story with you in the hopes I can get some moral support.I am a Bermudian single mother of a five-year-old child who was born nearly two months premature. By single mother I mean just that, I get absolutely no support from his father and am in constant battles to even get court ordered child support to be deducted from his pay. I am raising my child alone and have just been handed yet another challenge to deal with by one of the largest employers in Bermuda. My child has asthma which his doctors believe is a direct result of being born prematurely and his trigger is a cold and flu.I recently (within the last six months) changed my place of employment and during the interview process made my challenges with my child’s health crystal clear. My new employer seemed to be very understanding at the time and all was good or so I thought. Well my child fell ill with a 102 degree fever and the flu (like a lot of people on the Island) and I ended up being off work to care for him for three days under doctor’s certificate. My direct supervisor was kept abreast of my child’s condition via e-mail. May I add she never even had the professionalism or decency to respond or acknowledge my e-mails. Upon my return to work I was called into a meeting and penalised for being absentee and unavailable to work overtime on a Sunday. Might I add at this point my immediate supervisor is an expat who has no children of her own and obviously no compassion or caring for her “team”. It’s ironic that I work for the same organisation when my child was a baby and never faced these challenges under my Bermudian manager, which is steering me to become a staunch supporter of the Colonel’s policies on expat workers. There must be some kind of legislation against employees being punished for their children being sick and I am pretty sure that there is a Human Rights issue here also. This same expat supervisor has tried to undermine me on several occasions usually when I am on vacation or training, the latest incident while I was off with my child being sick. This I believe is a case of making other people look bad to make yourself look good. Unfortunately for her her last attempt backfired on her leaving her with egg on her face. It is a crying shame that my colleagues are too threatened to stand up for their rights as they all mutter quietly about how things are but none will do anything about it. As for me I have nothing to lose. The worst that can happen is I can lose my job but I will survive and as long as I have my baby, that’s all that matters and at the end of the day I take comfort in knowing nowhere in Bermuda is too far for me to be able to walk home unfortunately my supervisor cannot say the same.Let’s have some changes in my beautiful home country please.DISAPPOINTEDPembrokeBlank TV screenJanuary 31, 2011Dear Sir,Mr Editor, not sure if this happened to you last night, but I couldn’t get channels 41, 42, 47, 54, 340, 341, 342, 343 and 344.I know you don’t work at CableVision either, but I am curious as if this would upset you as well since this happened from 6.45pm yesterday. It probably would since paying for stations you can’t even watch would upset anybody. Hopefully this didn’t happen to you though.BLACK SCREENED IN DEVONSHIREDevonshire
