A fair share

April 27, 2011Dear Sir,I am a black Bermudian woman aged 63 years and felt compelled to respond to the letter to the Editor signed by “Another Bermudian Ready to Leave”.To respond to the question presented in that letter, in my experience in Bermuda over these many years, my conclusion is that Bermuda was not a better place for me to live 13 years ago, 23 years ago or ever. And if you are ready to go, my advice to you is to do just that. I have two sons, both of whom have studied abroad, thanks to financing from the Government of the day (the PLP) — we tried to get government financing in the ‘90s whilst the UBP was in power with no joy! I am proud to say that my sons have between them several university degrees and are gainfully employed here in Bermuda and will stay and help Bermuda resolve whatever problems arise for as long as they can or for as long as it takes, as will I. We are mindful that the problems with young black males lies in Bermuda’s history, long before the PLP came to power, of cheating them and their sisters from getting a quality education and thereby ensuring that they got no slice of the pie whilst continuing to grant status and a huge slice of the pie to as many Europeans as possible. We are also mindful of the fact that today’s problematic school system was implemented by the previous UBP government.I want to keep this letter brief and will only add that we say a big YES to term limits — everybody understands that international business is needed but we must also look to the future and ensure that Bermudians get a fair share of the pie.BERMUDIAN FOREVERCity of Hamilton
