'What, gain?'

Dear Sir,In response to ‘Opinion' by Phil Perinchief, May 10, 2011, I should like to take time out from growing my own vegetables to respond. Under Mr Perinchief's title, Transforming The Economy, the response must surely be, “what, again?”The Progressive Labour Party Government has transformed a once stable and prosperous economy to one of insurmountable debt, loss of property values, increasing unemployment, mass depression and spiralling gun violence. All that we had and all that we could feel good about, Mr Perinchief equates with capitalistic oppression of the working class. This Marxist thought pattern died out decades ago in the countries that lived and died by it. The Progressive Labour Party has been neither progressive nor labour but they certainly have had a party! If Mr Perinchief wishes to draw attention to high wages and inflated costs, then look no further than his Party's salaries and over budget capital projects. Is the cost of consumables the underlying problem or the one billion dollars plus debt the real issue? If the Government had not wasted hundreds of millions through mismanagement, they would have the breathing space to subsidise the unemployed, the rising health costs, loss of overtime, lack of busses and ferries and aid to the needy. Under the ‘dreaded' UBP Government, I seem to remember jobs for everyone, strong property values, inflow of international business with corresponding inflow of foreign exchange. Those who had newly built apartments, had stable rents and could put kids in college. The banks lent enough to keep the money flowing and businesses growing. You did not hear gunshots.Mr Perinchief's attempt to rewrite history is disingenuous. His belief is that international business is here to fund everyone's dreams of a grand lifestyle without our responsibility for controlling the local economy. Now that the Government has spent all the money, leaving us with an unmanageable debt and no idea how to rectify it other than cutting all Government workers' overtime, Mr Perinchief believes the competent businesses that already contribute generously and massively to our economy, should bear extra taxation. These international companies already pay tax via the Payroll Tax. In addition they provided much local employment, rents of offices to think how we must be seen by these high achieving yet generous companies when they are constantly harassed by the flip flopping policies of the PLP Government. On this note I must get back to enlarging my vegetable garden and you all know why.GARDENING IN ST GEORGE'S
