Fish with respect

May 31, 2011Dear Sir,Please allow me to express my concern over cruelty to fish, caused by locals working on a fishing boat that take tourists out to fish in our beautiful waters daily. A visiting friend of mine was horrified to discover what happened on a popular boat he went out on recently, for a few hours of fishing, with 20 other guests from a cruise ship in Dockyard. Fish were being caught on hooks, only to have the hook removed from the mouth and thrown back into the water. Some fish did not have the hook removed, because the hook broke, and were put back in the water with the hook still placed in the mouth. It was also shocking to learn of a “game” where a fish was caught and a rubber band placed tight on its dorsal fin. The fish was then thrown back into the water and the game was to see if it would bite on the hook again. Apparently there was a beer as a prize if you caught the fish with the rubber band. I am sure the chances of catching the same fish again are minimal and it will live with the rubber band until it falls off, or the fish dies of stress by not being able to swim properly. Not one single fish was killed and used for food. Minister Walter Roban is informed, and I hope he can look into this matter, and possible stop fun-fishing without respect for the marine life and environment.GITTE BRANDENBURGWarwick
