Slowing down the traffic
June 3, 2011Dear Sir,Having read about all of the accidents, personal injury, and damage to vehicles and property I believe that the major contributory factor is speed. Our roads are tiny and while the idiot who allowed large SUVs and huge trucks onto the Island has certainly contributed to the problems, speed is the main one.I have an idea. To stop the carnage, why don’t we insist upon vehicle riders and drivers going slower? Because our roads are tiny, we could introduce a speed limit of say 35kph and driving or riding at that speed would provide more time for people to react. It won’t stop every accident because there are other causes such as tail gating and inattention while talking or texting on cell phones and in all honesty we should probably introduce laws to stop those activities as well.Bermudians and visitors would be much safer on the roads if people slowed down or the police prosecuted everybody who exceeded this proposed 35kph speed limit. Okay, allow for minor inattention and speedo error and say prosecute all who exceed 45kph. That would be 25 percent faster than my proposed 35kph speed limit. If the Police don’t have enough officers available or undamaged vehicles left we could bring in speed cameras which have proven to slow down motorists in other countries and use fixed penalties to eliminate clogging up the courts. Don’t pay within 14 days and the vehicle is confiscated and the rider or driver is banned from travelling. Now there is an incentive to pay the fine. The fines could be progressive, say $100 for 46 to 50kph; $250 for 51 to 55kph and $500 for 56 to 60kph. Anything over that then the driver is banned for increasing periods of time.I asked some friends about my idea and they said we already have the 35kph speed limit in place and the other laws to. They said the problem was political indifference and an unwillingness to have police officers uphold existing laws. Well whatdayouknow! I always said, let them get away with breaking ‘little’ laws and before long the bad guys and girls start to break the ‘bigger’ ones like murder. How many deaths have we has so far this year?Bout time the laws we have were enforced.SLOW DRIVER IN PEMBROKEPembroke
