'Only $145 million'

June 22, 2011Dear Sir,How on this good earth can Premier Cox describe $145 Million of new loans as “only”.When the UBP were replaced by the PLP in 1998 they left the nation with approximately $150 million of debt after 30-odd years in power. Before her father died, he had reduced that debt to around $130 million and still allowed the machinery of government to perform satisfactorily. In just seven years the Premier, as Minister of Finance, has grown the national debt to over $1,000 million. The PLP Government continues to spend more than it earns just to meet day-to-day running costs and we are spending over a $1 million every week just to service that debt. The blasé attitude that this PLP Government has towards our future economic well being is unbelievable. They will beggar us all. We need to change to a Government that understands finance and the need to welcome back with open arms those who helped create the jobs for Bermudians that once made our economy the envy of the world.HOPING FOR CHANGEPembroke
