Consider the ramifications
September 30, 2011Dear Sir,A lot has been said about ways to improve Town Cut Channel in St George’s but before any considerations are made to improve it or even doing a survey, if it was myself who owned a large mega cruise ship I would get together with other owners of mega cruise ships and come and look at the feasibility and then make a joint report. Some points to take into account would be; how would you moor it alongside the docks? What type of bollards would you have to put in place? The present bollards that you have in place would not be enough to hold back a mega cruise ship if a sudden storm were to erupt without warning and it could happen. How many people remember the small cruise ship that was tied up alongside No. One Dock in Hamilton when a sudden severe storm erupted many years ago? This cruise ship’s mooring lines parted from the shoreline bollards and even pulled a bollard right out of the ground. This cruise ship ended up on the other side of the harbour alongside Harbour Road. So when you think about putting a megacruise ship in St George’s, you have to give it a very serious consideration.I personally believe a “Finger Pier” would be the answer to have a mega cruise ship in the St George’s area on the outside near St Catherine’s Fort, it would have easy access to the open ocean should a sudden storm erupt.PETER BROMBY SrPaget
