We need an inquiry

November 12, 2011Dear Sir,There seems to be a paralysis and an apathy on this lovely little island that is almost stifling, a total reluctance to address the wrongs of the past which pervade the very core of this Island’s integrity. It could be one of two things:1. It is either the calm before the storm; or2. Sweep all the misdeeds of the past under the mat, move on to shame and disgrace that we cannot get the judicial system to go after and investigate the allegations. Is there no one on this Island that can get a dedicated group of men to lead against corruption and deceit?Do we have to bow our heads and hear that dreadful repetitive expression “It is what it is” ? What is it , that hundreds of people on this island are in dire straits mainly because of corruption and waste and in their misery can see no redress or hope?My point is, does anyone really cares? We should, and if we don’t we will regret it!Sir John Swan and Warren Brown, and many others, have come with good ideas, but nobody picks up the banner, the flag that is already partially sullied, to rally us all to demand that we want justice for the little man who cannot fight alone, and for all decent thinking people in Bermuda.Looking at the bitter ends of the world’s Dictators, and how many lives over the years they took down with them. The bravery and courage and fortitude that they portrayed every day knowingly offering their very lives to write a wrong, can we do less on this little island ?Honour. Integrity. Standards. and Basic Decency are great causes to fight for. There needs to be a full inquiry to determine whether any corruption has taken place, and if so, to get restitution.DIANA WILLIAMSPembroke
