Tough action needed

This could get out of handDecember 7, 2011Dear Sir,Re: Prostitutes on Front StreetAfter reading the Wednesday, November 30 Royal Gazette report about the relatively new prostitution on Front Street, I was appalled that greater action had not been taken by the appropriate authorities. Front Street is the last place people would expect women to target their men, as in the movies we see it happening in the dangerous, backstreets. Is this what the historic Front Street is coming to? I believe that it is essential that greater action is undertaken in order to stop this before it gets worse. Even though we are in a time of economic downfall, prostitution should not be considered as an alternative for women and I feel that this needs to become clear to them. A law should be put into place due to the fact that it could soon get out of hand. This will not only scare prostitutes off the main streets of Hamilton but it will also prevent women from taking on prostitution as another option. The tourism industry has decreased dramatically; prostitution will not only ruin the reputation of Front Street as well as Bermuda to tourists, but to Bermudian men as well. As I said before, in order to set things back into place and let women know that this is not appropriate, serious action needs to take place. Police can do many simple things to catch prostitutes in the midst of their business such as getting police to go undercover on their busiest nights on Fridays and Saturdays in order to catch them out. Cameras could be set up on Front Street, outside restaurants and the other areas that prostitutes are likely to target their men. This will catch their faces so they are known to the general public assuring that men know when they see their face.Bermuda is small and the fact that some are considering taking up prostitution as a second option rather than finding a small job instead really shows what Bermuda is coming to. If the faces of these women were to get out to friends or family members, they would be outright ashamed and totally disbelieving. Also, the clients of these prostitutes could feel pressured or even worse, they could catch a dangerous disease. I feel as though we should take into consideration the fact that this could soon get out of hand if serious action isn’t undertaken. Think of the lives this could affect if this isn’t resolved.B CHLEBEKSmith’s
