We are not to blame

April 24, 2012Dear Sir,I refer to a letter in today’s paper from Ron Lacey of New York who complained in his letter of April 20, 2012 (on behalf of his friend), of the high cost of hotels and airfares to vacation in Bermuda. As a Bermudian, I really take great exception to his comments and would ask Mr Lacey and his friend when was the last time they priced the cost of a decent and safe hotel in New York — a hotel comparable to our Fairmont Hotels. The word exorbitant comes to mind and that is before the additional taxes that are also charged.Keeping in mind that Bermudians, and those living in Bermuda, also pay the same high airfares to the American Air carriers that provide service between Bermuda and American gateway cities, Bermuda can hardly be blamed for these high airfares. Mr Lacey should be asking these American air carriers how they can justify such high charges for such short flights. On a final note, I really don’t think that Mr Lacey should be embarrassed on our behalf because if his friend feels that the Florida Keys is a better vacation bargain then Bermuda, he is free to exercise his options, keeping in mind that cheaper certainly does not equate to better.DONNA BSandys
