Being run by emotion

May 2, 2012Dear Sir,In reference to the letter in today’s paper by Christopher Famous entitled ‘An open letter to the PLP’, when he makes statements like the following: “I support the PLP because they are my family come hell or high-water, I will never abandon my family.” All I can say is, here lies the problem for all to see. His support is based solely on emotion and definitely not logic. And unfortunately, this emotion is what has kept the PLP in power for the last 14 years. He continuously talks about his PLP family which is all fine and dandy, but the PLP family he is talking about is completely dysfunctional and is in need of dire psychological help. It is obvious that proper management, good governance, ethical behaviour, transparency and/or the handling of the taxpayer’s money mean absolutely nothing to Mr Famous which unfortunately, applies to too many PLP supportersMr Famous writes very articulately, but when it comes to his reasoning, he falls very short. How can someone not realise that this Government has put Bermuda in a $1.5 billion dollar debt in the last 14 years? No, let me correct that. This debt started when Ewart Brown became Premier and Paula Cox the Finance Minister so that makes it about eight years which is even worse — so in all actuality, that was when our major problems started. For anyone to push their chest out and say they will support a party “come hell or high water” is beyond me as that is completely lacking judgment. If one is wasting the household finances and has put the homestead into financial disaster because of their irresponsible and unacceptable behaviour and have to borrow money to pay their debts, surely there will be “hell to pay” and I don’t see how Mr Famous, can say otherwise! So my question to him is, “why would he so blindly support a party that has done the same thing?” He also mentioned about having common sense in one paragraph — where is his?I frankly don’t care who runs the Government, but if I was a supporter of a Government that was not performing as it should, I am sorry, that Government loses my support, and another thing, I will never support a Government because they look like me or anyone else for that matter as that is the most asinine thing I have ever heard of.Bermudians are always so quick to say how intelligent we are, well I must say that it is not intelligent to hear comments like the above — that is blissful ignorance at it worst! One last thing before I close Mr Editor. Mr Famous said in his letter and I quote: “The second gentlemen, a One Bermuda Alliance supporter, asked me, “Chris, why are you so critical of the OBA? Picking us apart like Jack the Ripper, yet we never once see you say anything negative about the PLP!” Again, there was an initial burst of emotional endorphins pushing the words to my fingers … “It is easy to rip your party apart because quite simply the cornerstone of your party is change, and you all have not changed one damn thing besides your name!” End quote. To Mr Famous — Again you are propelled by a “burst of emotional endorphins pushing the words to your fingers” which shows once again that you are led purely by emotions and not by common logic. Initially the PLP started out for all of the right reasons, but over the years, the PLP have changed drastically! They have changed for the worse and that is why we are in the mess that we find ourselves today. Just remember, emotion rules the heart and not the head!PAT FERGUSONWarwick
