Voting: Chicago style

June 21, 2012Dear Sir,I would like to address statements made by Walton Brown concerning voters rights in today’s opinion column dated June 21. As a Bermudian who has lived in the US for ten years, I just could not let his statement, “Republicans have never stopped searching for new ways to keep ballots out of the hands of minorities and poor people, groups that tend to vote Democratic”, go unchallenged. Mr Brown, if you do the research you will find their position is clear: Every illegal vote cast voids a legal vote, which is unfair to all legitimate voters. There has been a saying in America for many years which is: “Don’t stand in the path of any cemetery and a polling station on election day in Chicago, as you will get run over.” That phrase says it all! Mr Brown, as a Bermudian, I only expect the same here. If a Bermudian does not take the well-being of their Island serious enough to register in the constituency he or she lives in, regardless of their circumstances, it is just not good enough. That type of thinking is a major part of why this Island is deteriorating the way that it is!CRAIG MAYNEPembroke
