PLP?represents emancipation

July 4, 2012Dear Sir,I would be remiss in not mentioning that Mr Stewart and I often correspond via Facebook and e-mail. I say this because it should be incumbent on any political entity to infuse mutual respect for your fellow human beings. We as Bermudians must “Dream the Dream and Walk the Walk”. Now let’s delve into the meat of the matter. Scott Stewart waxes poetically about the transcending principles of the One Bermuda Alliance: Opportunity, Responsibility, Integrity, Transparency, Fairness, Inclusiveness and Service.Opportunity for whom? By their words and their actions I can safely say, not the working class of Bermuda. Responsibility, for whom? Thus far they have leaned towards big business every time, even when shown that those businesses were not operating in the best interests of the average Bermudian. Integrity: In my next letter you can judge for yourselves. Transparency: The OBA refuses to give answers, or only regurgitate their talking points and give vague answers. What is their plan after they suspend term limits? What programmes will they cut to save money? I don’t know and you don’t know because they won’t tell us.Fairness to whom? The ex- UBP MPs have kept the safe seats and put all the new candidates in unwinnable seats e.g. Ras Mykkal, Toni Spring, Jeff Baron, Nandi Davis, Alexis Swan, and Mr Stewart himself. Is that fair to persons trying to present a new face? Inclusiveness: Their executive is 80 percent white and the candidate selection committee is 90 percent ex United Bermuda Party. Service: Having two Keep Bermuda Beautiful cleanups are mere “photo opportunities”. That is not service. So Mr Stewart, I ask what are your party’s so called “transcending values”? I cannot speak for Mr Stewart but I can speak about the OBA. They have zero intention of discussing or tackling race issues in Bermuda. Since his eloquent Throne Speech reply in November Craig Cannonier has not uttered one single word about the evils of “racism and white supremacy”. So let Mr Stewart keep dreaming, the OBA is not the party that will usher in equality. The OBA is caught up with more style than substance. More prone to pronounce doom and gloom, than investment than opportunity, warn of a future of despair and uncertainty, than commitment to delivering results that instil hope and a clear vision of the future.Bermudians want to be given clarity on where we must go and where we are going. A party that is sensitive to the struggles they are going through and proposing ideas about what needs to be done. The Progressive Labour Party is writing a road map for the future while the OBA seeks to erase and rewrite their past. The OBA are a party trying to escape while the PLP are a party fighting austerity, taking on the challenges of today and laying a road map for tomorrow. Let me end with Mr Stewart’s own words as to why my family must and will always support the PLP: “The Progressive Labour Party represents their emancipation.” God Bless the PLPCHRISTOPHER FAMOUSDevonshire
