CableVision’s Olympian fiasco

July 29, 2012Dear Sir,Congratulations! Cablevision has done it again. Completely misunderstood the wishes of the Bermuda viewing public with respect to the Olympics coverage. I expect I am at least the hundredth person writing a letter to you. So I may be at the tail of a long queue for publication. But here are the prime observations. Before the start of the Olympics, CableVision proudly announced they would have coverage on two different channels — 11 and 514. Hooray! So, in theory, this would double the categories of events shown. But no, it seems that not only are the events on channels 11 and 514 often covering the same events simultaneously, but the source of coverage is frequently identical — same voice-over. As if this wasn’t annoying enough, the quality of the pictures on both channels are not clear — indeed the pictures give the impression of being shot by a bunch of amateurs. Furthermore, the channels sometimes can go for ten to 15 minutes without a single thing happening.Government licenses Cablevision. How is it possible that they have let the Bermuda public down, yet again, so badly? This Olympic coverage fiasco goes back decades to well before CableVision even came on the scene. So successive Governments have been equally to blame. I do not know what WOW is offering. But if WOW’s Olympic coverage is superior to Cablevision, and I can get a WOW signal at my home, I shall be happy to change providers forthwith. And I expect I am not alone with this thinking.ROBIN BLACKBURNEHamilton Parish
