Don’t insult the intelligence of voters

August 19, 2012Dear SirThere is a point that is often made in discussions with people who had supported the Progressive Labour Party in the past and have seen the light these days. They resent being described as less than intellectual and perhaps even sheep who followed the shepherd over the cliff. They resent that their motive and their support was misguided and that they were somehow incapable of seeing the reality and making a better call. It is a valid point and I would feel the same way. Anybody who is actively involved in the One Bermuda Alliance campaign has witnessed such a shift in sentiment; such a sense of disappointment among former PLP support; and a new awareness that there is a better choice this time around. It would be easy to come away with a sense that “they should have seen this coming!” and that “they” should have been smarter. The PLP may not have mastered much but they have mastered the art of spin. They have become almost expert in persuading people to vote for them for virtually every reason except the really important ones. Even in 1998, many old time United Bermuda Party supporters believed the spin and figured that it was time for a change. The hope that a PLP government would be able to accomplish “the next step” of social change was believed by all of us. Eventually we discovered that they lied to everyone when they needed to get their way and they were able to fool many, many people at least on three occasions! I hope we can get past this and just get started on the road to recovery. We need a change and we need to make decisions based on issues and solutions and not based on race, ‘family’ or power and greed. There are only two choices — we know we are doomed with the PLP but there is a sense of hope and a feeling that maybe these OBA types can turn the ship in the right direction.I NEVER WANT TO –BE FAMOUSCity of Hamilton
