Former UBP supporters backing OBA
September 3, 2012Dear Sir,“To be a true player you have to know how to play. If she says a night, convince her to say a day. Never admit to a word that she says and if she claims you tell her baby no way! She even caught me on camera (It wasn’t me)! She saw the marks on my shoulder (It wasn’t me). Heard the words that I told her (It wasn’t me). Heard the scream get louder (It wasn’t me)!”Shaggy’s hit song resonates in my head daily. No philandering on my part, but because of what I am hearing from supporters of the One Bermuda Alliance. Every time the topic is broached about the party that was the forerunner of the OBA (the once mighty United Bermuda Party) many who are OBA supporters quickly distance themselves and say ... “It wasn’t me!” OK, let’s examine this more closely. Here are the election results from 2007 general election. Progressive Labour Party 36 candidates 16,800 votes 52.45 percent 22 seats. United Bermuda Party 36 candidates 15,161 votes 47.34 percent 14 seats. Some 15,161 persons or 47 percent of the electorate voted for the UBP. The Royal Gazette has clearly stated that 90 percent of the persons who voted UBP will vote OBA. So clearly this is not me pulling numbers out of my head.I can fully understand the myriad of reasons for their haste to rid themselves of the image of the UBP: Racism, classism, nepotism, cronyism (sound familiar?). The well documented use of black candidates to present a front of a multicultural party. Ask Wayne Furbert, Gwyneth Rawlins or Kim Swan. If I were a former UBP supporter, I sure as hell wouldn’t admit it now. It will be far too heavy of a millstone to carry around, especially in this an election year. As much as I would like to give the OBA the benefit of the doubt as to their intentional and goals, there are major problems even attempting to do so.1. The OBA goals mirror that exactly of the UBP goals.2. The OBA general membership mirrors that of the UBP.3. The OBA MPs apart from a few are all ex-UBP MPs.4. Most telling is the general mindset that business and guest workers take precedence over the Bermudian “suspend term limits and figure something out later”. Bob RichardsThe central topic is this: Every single OBA supporter and some of the new candidates are stating: “It wasn’t me.” My question now is did the 15,161 persons disappear from the Bermudian landscape? Or did one person vote 15,161 times? As the numbers show a lot of damn people voted UBP five years ago. One of the slogans was “Vote for your future not from your history.” Unless all these people were closet PLP supporters, I believe they voted for their future but their history caught up with them. To them I say this: “Shout it loud, you were UBP, and you were proud!”In summation, folks, I leave you with this question. Why are these OBA folks quick to adopt almost every aspect of the UBP architecture and infrastructure and yet say they are distancing themselves from the UBP and saying “It wasn’t me”. Let’s be real, the numbers prove, many, yet not all, of the same ones voting and supporting the OBA were the same ones who voted and supported the UBP for 40 years. One thing I know for sure.IT WASN’T MEDevonshire
