Logic and emotion
September 9, 2012Dear Sir,A year ago the OBA began a slogan of “Voting from logics vs. voting from emotions”. Allegedly PLP supporters only voted on the emotions of race, revenge, anger, hate etc, while OBA supporters vote based on economics, rationale and basic common sense.Essentially what they are saying is that PLP supporters, blindly and sheepishly kept ticking that box PLP for no other reason besides “paying back the White Man for 400 years of oppression”. According to them, we never have had any logical breakdown of which party had the best of intentions for all of Bermuda. We never voted for the PLP based on the facts, that they had put in place many needed social services and infrastructure such as: Future Care, day care allowance, tax breaks for seniors, investment in NTB, Heritage Wharf, Dame Lois Building, fast ferries and a modern bus fleet. No, we only voted for the PLP candidate because they were black. No other reason such as they were intelligent, well educated, articulate, involved in their communities, and most importantly dedicated to our country. They have trotted out every lyric to get people to switch over to their crusade. Debt, corruption, cronyism, Burchallism, Swanism, Rodney Smithism, Kevin Comeauism. Not one of these things has turned the tide in their favour. So what’s the next logical thing?Tons of OBA supporters hide behind fake names and unleash emotional rhetoric on internet blogs. I love to read and debate. Yet as a Bermudian I refuse to read these blogs. The terms of sheep, kool aid drinkers, blind bats are only modern day words for the old ” N word.”With nine percent of white voters supporting them, the OBA know the only way they have any chance to win the government is to convince enough black voters to turn against the PLP. So what will they now do? They will put out adverts showing they now represent the black businesses, the black labour force, the black civil servants, the black church groups, the black IB workers. We will most likely see fewer white faces on their adverts this election. The logic is they already have the white vote. They now desperately need to get the “black vote”.I note with great amusement their writers take liberty using my surname and slogans of “Family and Stand Strong.” I truly am flattered by that growing flock of mocking birds. The OBA will attempt to appeal to emotion with pictures and songs. Their writers will tone down their negative rhetoric to appear more welcoming to blacks.Essentially their logic is now to appeal to the “Black Emotive. “Nothing wrong with seeking unity. Yet why wait till an election?“Ya running and ya running, But ya can't run away from yourself” — Marley. My next letter will focus on the word Trust.THOMAS CHRISTOPHER FAMOUSDevonshire
