Commissiong off the mark
October 10, 2012Dear Sir,Rolfe Commissiong’s opinion in today’s Royal Gazette is that Bermuda’s recession is coming to an end. Well, to be fair, it is his opinion and not fact and he has every right to be wrong as time will prove. But here is the wonderful thing about such statements and opinions; when they prove wrong, we have either forgotten them or they have become lost in an absolute storm of spin, lies and broken promises so that one more is soon lost. Do you notice one snowflake in a blizzard? And too, when the time comes and our recession dips lower, it will be explained away by saying it is the fault of the rest of the world — and not the governments. Nice one. The fact that a lot of the world is in recession is not Bermuda’s fault — but I don’t know anyone who has said it is our fault. What is true and what is our fault is that we were ill prepared for a world recession — and that is the fault of the government in power. Our country’s piggy bank was drained — and we still don’t know exactly how. Then there has been mismanagement at every step of the way, which wasted millions and millions more dollars. We should have been, we could have been, in a far better position to have weathered this recession, which would have put us in a better position to weather the next one — the one just around the corner.Does anyone else notice that the government and their mouthpieces are always talking about a better future, wonderful plans which are about to come to pass — but they don’t? How many years have we been looking forward to those promises but they tantalisingly always stay in the future? It is easier to believe in fairytales and better to make promises than to deliver them. And Rolfe Commissiong’s latest opinion is one of those bed time stories. There is no avoiding the fact that there will be another recession soon — more than likely within three to five years — and while it will not be Bermuda’s fault, it is totally wrong that we should head towards it with no preparations because we decided to believe in another fairy tale.Actually the sky is about to fall in.MARK EMMERSONPembroke
