Fix unemployment now

October 18, 2012Dear Sir,As a young person in Bermuda, this society tends to label the youth as troublemakers or persons that just don’t care about what is going on. But what most people don’t realise is that the youth take notice of what is going on and that we have great discussions about it.One of the major topics of conversation is that this Island has an increasingly serious problem with unemployment, to which Government seems to have no answers. Our unemployment rate is not just directly from the world's economic problems, but has been brewing for many years and has now reached a boiling point. With more and more Bermudians becoming unemployed, the situation is becoming dire. There is not a week that goes by without more jobs being lost. Government continues to diligently work hard to secure international business, which is a good thing, but they fail to work diligently to secure jobs for Bermudians. If Government paid attention, they would realise that more and more Bermudians are not returning to the Island after finishing school. One of the biggest turn-offs for young Bermudians fresh out of college is the fact that they are unable to secure work let alone secure work in their field of study. This has been a continuing trend for many years, but nobody has decided to address the issue.Another major turn off for Bermudians returning from school is the level of experience that these companies are asking for. Without experience, and companies not allowing young Bermudians to gain the experience we as a society end up with educated, unemployed Bermudians.Getting rid of the trade schools and doing away with the free education at the Bermuda College without implementing alternatives was a major blunder by both past and present Governments. It has led to foreign workers being brought into the Island to fill vacant jobs that Bermudians are unqualified to do. Reinstating these two advanced education opportunities will allow Bermudians to get qualified to fill jobs not only in the trade sector but tourism and international business sectors. Which will in turn help to build Bermuda from its foundation up.How adequate is this Government at handling the issue of unemployment in Bermuda? Is this Government actually paying attention to the issues at hand? How can we expect a Government to turn around the unemployment rate when they didn’t want to take a five percent pay cut?How can we expect a Government to secure jobs for jobless Bermudians when they haven’t been unemployed in a time when most Bermudians are struggling? How can we expect for the Government to ensure that Bermudians are not being overlooked for jobs when they have turned a blind eye to the rise in unemployment? Two words come to mind unproductive and unqualified. If there is ever a time for a new Bermuda, that time is now! I just hope that the next Government to step up to the plate is ready and able to tackle the growing problem of unemployment in Bermuda.AARON EDNESSWarwick
