Quicker building at Morgan’s Point

Morgan's Point.

Ideas for Morgan’s PointOctober 26, 2012Dear Sir,In reference to having one or more hotels on Morgan's Point in some future time, I would suggest the following:That the old Tender Pier (some 600 plus feet long) be encased with this heavy sheet piling and made into a permanent pier. After the sheet piling was put in place the same way that No 8 Dock was built in the 1970s and 1980s using 8ins steel tie rods to hold all this sheet piling in place. Then this pier could be filled in with rubble from the old supply building close by and other buildings in the immediate area. After the Tender Pier was built and paved over, you could have all building materials including all the steel framing that goes into modern hotel complexes brought to Morgan's Point by our regular cargo ships that frequent Bermuda, and be unloaded at Morgan's Point. There are enough contractor shore cranes that could be used to unload ships at Morgan’s Point.By having ships unload all the building materials such as steel, 20ft and 40ft containers this would eliminate the use of our local roads for movements of building materials such as steel and containers from Hamilton or elsewhere. When the Southampton Princess was being built all the steel, 11,000 tons of it, plus 26,000 20ft containers of building materials and furnishings of this hotel, it took some two and a half years to complete. The Southampton Princess broke ground in March, 1969 and was officially opened on August 12, 1972.After the Morgan’s Point hotels have been completed the Tender Pier structure could be used by visiting cruise ships as another port or for local boating traffic used by these new hotels.PETER BROMBY SrPagetPs Just think of the time, money, and effort that goes into hotel expansions if everything was brought closer to the building sites that having to transport everything from Hamilton to Morgan’s Point if a pier was built first.PPs I continue to offer these suggestions in letters to the Editor hoping that some of my suggestions will be taken up by any Government of the day.
