PLP is distorting the truth
December 11, 2012Dear Sir,The PLP appears to support keeping term limits on work permits granted to foreign workers and the OBA has said it will suspend this policy.I support term limits, but do not agree how they are administered. For occupations such as nurses, actuaries, accountants, chefs, police and reinsurance there are definitely not enough Bermudians to fill these posts. Instead of granting one year and two year work permits in these fields, I support automatic three-year work permits with the ability to renew only two times thereby limiting the residency of the work permit holder to nine years maximum. The only way this will work is if the Departments of Immigration, Education and Statistics collaborate to monitor the number of Bermudians studying in such fields and to know who will be returning in what years. Bermudians must come first, but business also has to be able to function with consistency.Having said all that, I am totally put off by the distortion of facts as presented by the PLP in regard to Bob Richards’s statements about the Cayman Islands and how we must meet the challenges of competing with jurisdictions who offer similar international services as Bermuda. The fact the Cayman Islands Premier has been arrested should not give the PLP the right to falsely interpret the statements of the OBA.I do not know who is advising the PLP, but one thing is for sure: the way the PLP is marketing itself to the electorate is not going to gain them votes by consistently and maliciously making erroneous statements about the Opposition. Another example is the Transport Minister’s fairy tale outlook on how the public transport is being managed, and quite rightly OBA Shadow Minister, Pamela Gordon set the record straight.I am labour, I am liberal, and I have a socialistic outlook but I also understand that we can only succeed in a capitalistic society. However, I am not going to vote PLP if fiction is more important to the Party than fact. I feel almost drawn to the OBA at this point. I am a fence sitter and at this point maybe I won’t vote.CHERYL POOLEYDevonshire
