Preparing for sea rise

December 18, 2012Dear Sir,This is an open letter from myself, a citizen of Bermuda. to the Governor. We have just had an election yesterday, however the issue that I am raising for your attention is not the responsibility of our government. In 2009 during the sitting of the United Nations in Copenhagen, one of the concerns that were highlighted was the effect of climate change and its side effect of melting ice increasing the level of the ocean surface. In view of this potential disaster that could play out on small islands like Bermuda, the United Nations has laid aside between $30 billion and $100 billion to assist small islands avoiding this demise.I have been made to understand that the Premier of the day made an application to attain these funds in order that we might secure our islands and shorelines. This undoubtedly would have injected a fusion of funds to assist us in building wharves, docks, retainer walls, piers and any bulkheads that would ensure limited washdown by the ocean. At the same time, it would also have prevented the economic meltdown that Bermuda is now dealing with.Nevertheless since we are a colony of the United Kingdom, the responsibility to attain those funds from the United Nations falls in your lap and the legislators of the United Kingdom. Sir, time is not our friend right now, we need to begin implementing plans, measures and means to shore up our coastlines prior to the next season of storms in the coming year. We must keep in mind that the scientist have predicted that the oceans will rise some five feet in the coming five years. The value of attaining those funds has an even greater purpose as it will provide a cashflow to employ the thousands of construction workers and related services that need a revenue injection here in Bermuda. I trust you can and will do all you can to assist Bermuda in this immediate future challenging situation. Keep in mind, the airport/causeway will likely be one of the first pieces of land to go under.JOHN H HOLDIPP III
