A new day
December 22, 2012Dear Sir,Here are a few thoughts of mine that I would like to impart to your readers. When I write, I believe in calling a spade a spade and try to be as truthful to myself and to those reading as I possibly can. We live in a very complex world with many different thoughts and ways of thinking but, the final analysis is that everyone wants to be happy and everyone wants a fair deal — gone are the days of "them and us" — it is just us and if we don't work together, we will die.Togetherness is the only way this world or little Island is going to survive. There is no more it's "our turn now" and when we think about it, it should never have been "their turn then", but as fate will have it, that’s the way it was which also proved it didn't work then and it won't work now. We have come too far to turn back to where one group of people rule over another. We have youngsters who are of a completely different mindset and that’s because of education and exposure. They don’t harbour the ill thoughts of some of our elders — and if they do, it is because their elders have ingrained in them this thought of hatred and resentment of days gone by! We know what happened in the past and it was a transgression against mankind and we cannot go back and change what has happened just like we cannot bring back our young black men that have been gunned down by the senseless atrocities that have occurred. We must go on and work to change the mindsets of some of our young and not so young people. If you really think about it, no one owes you anything, and with what’s available to people nowadays, there is no excuse for not nourishing your brain to think logically and to interpret right from wrong. Some people have to learn how to set their minds free and step up into life and step outside of the box. If you want respect and fairness, then you must treat the next person with respect and fairness. It is very simple. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you — it’s in the Bible for Pete’s sake and you’ll find lots of other great stuff in there also.Look at what happened on Monday. The OBA which formed 18 months ago won the election. Why did they win the election? They won because people were tired of the same old race baiting nonsense the PLP have been handing out for the past 14 years. They won because the PLP lost the trust of the people — they won because there were too many unanswered questions about the dubious administration of Brown and Cox — they won on the issues of the day and they won because the PLP did not step outside of the box and lost touch with the people instead — they catered to a certain segment of the community and forsook all others. One of the saddest things is the PLP could have done wonders for this Island, but unfortunately, it was their “It’s our turn now attitude” along with complacency, ineptitude, bad attitude and greed that killed them. In my estimation they will go the same route the UBP went.Thank God the OBA stepped outside of the box by forming and saved the day. Thanks again OBA and I wish you well in the monumental task that is before you. Bermuda has been holding its breath too long and it’s good to breathe again!PAT FERGUSON
