Give them work

February 27, 2013Dear SirThe US Consul General, Robert Settje stated: “The Bermuda Police Service can continue to arrest people but in the end you’re not going to solve the problem if the society keeps producing children who are at risk and will turn to gangs for whatever it is that they need ...”It is clear to me that society keeps producing at risk children because we do not have the appropriate policies in place to help at risk families. How many Bermudian families are out of work to date? How many of these families have children? Who can they turn to for help? The police and government always talk about fighting crime “from the bottom up”, and it’s the most moronic approach to a very bad situation. Logic states, that if you take five guys off the streets, ten will replace them tomorrow. However, if you remove the head of a criminal ring, you will disrupt or eliminate its criminal activities. Millions of dollars are being spent to remove the “nobody” from off the street. Whilst, the “somebody” continues to live the life of a productive member of society and poison our youth by the consumption of drugs and the allure of easy money or a false sense of family. If you want to get rid of gangs, drug dealers and at risk families, help them find work. Part-time or full-time work. With the rise in unemployment, what do you think will happen to this Island? More crime. We have heard all the lip services over the years. Yet the problem gets worse every year. Decisions are being made at the top and you wonder how it will make Bermuda a better place for its voting public. Give your voters work and watch how this Island will return to its former peace loving nature. We import so many people to do work that some of these gang members can do. Have you ever thought to send a bus to pick them up and give them an honest days work? We have to think out of the box people in order to get our people on track. If we keep waiting for someone else to take responsibility we will wake up one morning to find ourselves prisoners in this Island.CONCERNED BERMUDIANPaget
