Blacks are not the only ones that suffered. Move on!
March 11, 2013Dear Sir,After reading The Royal Gazette, and Ira Philip’s historical contribution about the Bermuda pharmacist not being able to find work in Bermuda, I was sad. However, these things happened and not only to blacks. In London, in the 1950s and 1960s, advertisements of apartments for rent frequently stated ‘No blacks or Irish need apply’.Now, if you get the gist of where I am going, not too far back in history to the Second World War, the poor Jews were taken to the gas chambers.Further back different tribes from other parts of Europe invaded Britain and slaughtered many indigenous Britons. In Ireland, Cromwell burned the churches and schools, destroyed books; saw the poor Irish as ignorant pigs. Then, along comes the famine in Ireland in 1847. Again, the poor Irish starved to death.I say to the blacks, count yourselves lucky. Many were taken out of Africa - a black continent of extreme corruption whose own leaders sold them into slavery. Most were taken to white continents where there now is no limit to what an individual can achieve - Barack Obama is President of the United States.Blacks in Bermuda hold most of the Government jobs and Bermuda has had a black government for 14 years. What more can reasonable persons want? Some of the chosen leaders of the black community, and others, persist in using past history to anger and inflame some black persons, and young persons, with the result that the Bermuda community is seriously and severely divided in ways never ever seen before. The result is never-ending and unnecessary unhappiness leading to feelings of hopelessness. We are not without hope. I repeat: We are not without hope. What is to be done? We must influence Ira Phillip and others to stop trying to inflame us.We must think and act in positive terms so that we can, in clear-headed ways with genuine good will towards all, deal with our communal problems. Finally, it must be understood that looking at, and studying, black history is not a bad thing at all. But, in doing so, we must not let the past seem - as too often appears to be the case with far too many of our leaders and prominent persons - as though it still exists. The past does not still exist and the past is the past. We must move on so as to lift and improve the entire Bermuda community.LETS MOVE ON!Warwick
