Have some backbone
March 20, 2013Dear Sir,Regarding the public concern and debate in the House of Parliament of the Letters to the Editor and the ‘blogs’, be it other media or this medium, on pen names or anonymous signatures, here’s my opinion: Freedom of speech is a constitutional right, point given. The ability to disrespect another human being, race or ethnicity, in my opinion, demonstrates lack of self-respect. If one has no self-respect, respect for anyone else is gone-like-the-wind. Mr Acting Editor, I feel one way of deterring such, would be to have the policy where given names be attached to letters submitted, in addition to the same being published. This in itself would eliminate all the disingenuous, insincere and disrespectful thoughts of some within our community. No longer will they be able to hide behind pen names. Therefore, if they’re serious about conveying their perceptions, and have the backbone to do so, why not stand by one’s convictions. Otherwise, it appears that the anonymous writer lacks integrity or dignity, whilst pretending in the public domain, to be someone that they’re not. Deception is a form of dishonesty, which by all standards is wrong.GLENN CHASEWarwickActing Editor’s note: We do ask letter writers to submit their real names, a contact telephone number and address before publication.
