It won’t be easy to turn Bermuda around

May 21, 2013Dear Sir,May I commend the new government for trying to get Bermuda back on track. The OBA inherited a Bermuda never seen before. A country reeling with a poor economy and one with serious social problems — unemployment and underemployment along with a high crime rate with many of its citizens stressed and struggling. The OBA did not imagine how big our debt was or that they would have to borrow just to meet payroll for the workers in their employ. A shrinking tax base has made it more difficult going forward to maintain the everyday things we are used to. Social programmes underfunded as the cry for them increases. International business looking afar for more friendlier climes and tourism in decline. A Bermuda in trouble, some of which could have been avoided. Will the OBA be able to reverse this negative spiral we are in? Can new foreign investment be attracted to our shores resulting in job opportunities for those out of work? Will Operation Ceasefire bring our young men together so that they do not continue being apart? Can healthcare costs be reduced so our seniors do not have to choose between food or medicine? Is it possible to attain a balanced budget, and start to grow our economy? These are just some questions that time will answer. In this writer’s opinion we can turn Bermuda around. It will not be easy though, our leaders will need our assistance.CHANGERSandys
