Is it really so hard to import fresh garlic?

February 14, 2014

Dear Sir,

As I am sure everyone knows, fresh garlic has a lot of health benefits for the consumer. People have used garlic for centuries for both culinary purposes and for health benefits. Many people today use garlic as a cancer deterrent. I believe it was once known as “the Russian penicillin” which is mainly because of its health powers and ability to kill off germs!

Over the years, I have noticed that the quality of garlic that we receive in Bermuda is not always the best. Most of the time, the garlic has begun to sprout, which is a sign of age. As a Chef it is difficult to work with such poor quality as it can cause an added bitter taste to your food. Also, as an added risk, if you forget to remove the sprout in the garlic clove, you run the risk of not being able to digest your food.

Surely, our local food importers and distributors must be able to bring in fresher produce. We definitely pay the price for fresh produce, so how about we actually receive fresh produce in exchange.

Just food for thought and a genuine concern about the quality of fresh garlic in Bermuda.
