Care in the community

February 17, 2014

Dear Sir,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Bermuda who so kindly donated money to the Bermuda War Veterans Association this year. As you are probably aware, our programme starts on the Friday before November 11 and continues for several months. We write letters for this purpose to about 200 companies and individuals.

We did not receive response from a number of companies who normally provide some of the larger amounts, which is a clear indication of the status of business in our community.

However, donations from individuals were higher by 15% more than contributions during the past three years. This would indicate to me that the community appreciates the need for assistance for those in need and I would like to extend to them a special thank you.

I do regret that we are unable to supply poppies but the Royal British Legion will not sell us any as we do not spend the money received in the same manner as they do. Also, they require us to send any funds collected to them, which does not help our own plan. With funds accumulated over the years, we can continue to help veterans and their dependents for a further five years, but we need to continue to collect funds for any additional cases which may arise during that period.

Once again, my very grateful thanks to the people of Bermuda and to you and your staff for your help over the years.

Yours sincerely

J.R.H LIGHTBOURN

President
